Information for those who are bringing medicines for personal use into Japan
Please note that Japanese pharmacies only accept prescriptions issued by Japanese doctors. If you need to purchase prescription medication in Japan, it is advisable to ask your family doctor to write down your symptoms, the medication you need, and all relevant details in English in advance. Many Japanese doctors can read English because they read English medical journals. (Unfortunately, however, many doctors cannot speak English.)
If you have a sore throat, you can also buy throat lozenges. These are available at the supermarket. In Japanese, they are called “Nodo-ame.”のどあめ If you ask a supermarket employee, they will be happy to help you.
